The earliest period being the Mesolithic to 17th century pagan deposits. Students are not required to have any experience in archaeology. They we will be taught all the basic excavation techniques during the first week, also students can book as many weeks as their course requires. Following weeks they will move around the site and do more post excavation work too.
During the following weeks the students have the opportunity to dig on different areas of the site to broaden their excavation experience. We welcome beginners and keen amateurs too. This is a permanent archaeology centre and we have full indoor facilities during wet weather (look at the tour of our facilities from the drop down menu).
Each week the students are welcome to attend an illustrated lecture on Experimental Archaeology, by the world renowned expert on this subject Jacqui Wood the site director.
This site is quite unique in many ways and has featured on Discovery Channel News website for the pagan swan feather pits two seasons ago. Parents can excavate with their children providing they are over 14 years old. The site is situated in a delightful south facing valley bordered by a stream and ideally situated to visit the many ancient monuments in the county.
If you still have the energy after a day's digging, Cornwall offers the best surfing beaches in the UK, the nearest beach to the site is within four miles, TRURO is only three miles away offering shops, pubs, bars, restaurants and clubs. Even closer is the village of Chacewater, which also has various amenities.
The Day starts at 10:00 and usually finishes around 4.00.
